- This section contains 4 parts: A "Short" complete description; a "Long"
- complete description; Registration Information; and a "What's New"
- description. These descriptions may be used in whole or in part
- in your catalog.
- JEPRS is generally announced in vendors' catalogs under
- the "database" or "word processing" sections (or both). For
- consistency, I prefer the "database" section.
- If your catalog mentions ASP membership for authors &
- programs, please denote JEPRS as such a program, since its
- author is a member of the ASP.
-
- One-line description. If your catalog provides a short,
- one-line description, you might consider:
- >> "JEPRS v2.5: Bibliographic Database System (ASP Shareware)"
-
- If your catalog provides searchable keywords, you might
- consider the following:
- >> JEPRS Jeepers Bibliography Database Med2Go WordPerfect ASP Shareware <<

- **************************************************
- Short, Complete (old & new features) Description:
- **************************************************
- JEPRS (pronounced "Jeepers!") is a bibliographic database
- management system for writers & scientists. With JEPRS, users can add,
- edit, list, search, format, import, and export their reference citations.
- Each reference has room for a title, authors, journal or book title, pages,
- volume, year, type (journal, book, or abstract), editor, publisher, &
- keywords. The program can now produce WordPerfect 5.0/5.1 and PC-Write 3.0
- compatible output files (including boldface, italics, underlining, super-
- and sub-scripts). It can also read files made by these word processors and
- automatically generate a bibliography. JEPRS runs on IBM compatibles with
- at least 384kb of free memory, using DOS version 2.0 or greater. Any video
- card and monitor will work.

- **************************************************
- Long, Complete (old & new features) Description:
- **************************************************
- JEPRS (pronounced "Jeepers!") is a bibliographic database
- management system for writers & scientists. With JEPRS, users can add,
- edit, list, search, format, import, and export their reference citations.
- Each reference has room for a title, authors, journal or book title, pages,
- volume, year, type (journal, book, or abstract), editor, publisher, &
- keywords. JEPRS does NOT require a hard disk; it does require two
- 360k floppies (or one 720k floppy) and 320k memory, so any computer
- with 384k memory should work. DOS version 2.0 or greater, or any version
- of OS/2 Operating System is also required. JEPRS runs as a DOS program
- under the Microsoft Windows 3.0/3.1 Operating Environment. Any video card
- and monitor will work with the program.
- Ease of Use: JEPRS supports a mouse on its pull-down/pop-up menu
- system. With an on-line, context-sensitive help system and over 100 pages
- of documentation, including a quick-start tutorial, JEPRS is easy to learn
- both for beginners & advanced users. It also includes an icon for use with
- Windows 3.0's Program Manager.
- Output: New in version 2.5 is the ability to create WordPerfect
- 5.0/5.1 and PC-Write 3.0 output files--now you can combine the power of your
- word processor with the simplicity & power of JEPRS. The formatting
- capabilities of the program include italics, underlining, superscripts,
- subscripts, and boldface.
- Automatic Bibliography Generation: Version 2.5 can now "read" a
- WordPerfect 5.x or PC- Write 3.0 document, find special JEPRS codes you
- place in it, and automatically generate a bibliography in your word
- processor's file format. At your option, it can then go back into your
- original document and replace the JEPRS codes with either an author+year
- citation (such as ``Smith, et al. (1991)'') or with consecutive numbers (1,
- 2, 3,...).
- Searching: You can specify up to 10 items to search, using
- AND/OR/NOT Boolean logic and parentheses to combine search terms. Searches
- can be case-sensitive or -insensitive, and searching is possible through a
- range of years. Results of a search are sortable by author, year, or
- journal, with each reference displayed in a condensed, one-line format. You
- can scroll through the list, marking references to be sent to a printer or
- text file. Pressing Enter will display the entire reference, and F4 brings
- up the editing screen.
- Utilities: JEPRS comes with a free utility called Med2Go (which may
- be distributed independently of JEPRS). With Med2Go, users can import
- MedLine, BRS/Colleague, ERIC, PsycLit, and comma-delimited (DIF) files into
- their database. JEPRS also features MedLine and comma-delimited export
- capabilities for compatibility with other database programs.
-
-
- *************************************************************************
- Registration Information:
- *************************************************************************
- Registration is US$49.95 + $4 postage ($10 postage outside USA),
- and registered users receive the latest copy of the program on disk, 6
- months of free technical support and a 60-page, laser-printed, ring-bound
- manual. In addition, registered users receive both DOS and Microsoft
- Windows versions of Med2Go, a MedLine file translation utility for
- Biomedical researchers & clinicians. Registered users also receive
- Peruse, a mouse-compatible file viewing utility.

- What's New (for additional information, see the file WhatsNew.Doc):
- *******************************************************************
-
- VERSION 2.57
-
- We have moved and the documentation has been updated to show
- our new Minnesota address.
- Jeepers 1.0 for Windows is now available! It has complete
- file compatibility (including both database files and formatting
- files) with JEPRS 2.5 for DOS. Jeepers for Windows requires Word for
- Windows, WordPerfect for Windows, or AmiPro for Windows in order to
- print bibliographies.
-
-
- VERSION 2.56
-
- Bug fix: There was a problem importing MedLine files: If the
- journal name included a number in it, it would not import correctly.
- This has been fixed.
-
-
- VERSION 2.55
-
- Bug fix: A problem reading certain WordPerfect files was fixed
- (the problem only occurred on files of specific lengths).
-
-
- VERSION 2.54
-
- Major Enhancement: If you cite a reference more than once at the
- Format Menu (either in a Number File, Word Processor Input File, or at the
- Keyboard), JEPRS will now include it only once in the bibliography (even
- if the references are sorted). This feature was added due to requests from
- users.
- Bug fix: No longer adds a title to your word processor output file
- (this is not necessary, since your word processor can do it better)
- Bug fix: JEPRS occasionally had problems reading WordPerfect files.
- It would sometimes not find any JEPRS codes in your manuscript, even if
- they were actually there. This only happened if you had certain combinations
- of formatting codes at the very beginning of your WordPerfect document. This
- has been fixed.
- Bug fix: If you used the Format menu to format references from a
- Number file or Word Processor Input File, and there were more citations
- than references in your database (for example, if one reference were cited
- several times), JEPRS might crash. This has been fixed.
-
-
- VERSION 2.53:
-
- "Black and White" mode has been modified to work correctly on
- *all* computers (including portables).
- A *rare* problem with the *.Jpr and *.Jpk database files has been
- fixed. The problem was that if the power was cut off before JEPRS was
- exited, the files were not properly written to disk; when this happened
- the files became corrupted and the user had to write to me to get the
- database files fixed. This update forces JEPRS to write all the data to
- your disk after any reference is added, imported, or edited. This slows
- down the operation slightly on floppy disks (hard disks are fast enough
- that you shouldn't notice a difference), but provides greater data
- safety.
-
-
- VERSION 2.52:
-
- Bug fix: creating configuration files now works correctly.
- Also, A NEW ADDRESS FOR CONTACTING THE AUTHOR AND SENDING IN
- REGISTRATIONS!
-
-
- VERSION 2.51:
-
- Several bug fixes and enhancements have been made. When entering
- references, you can now enter foreign (non-English) characters that the
- IBM PC supports. In addition, when you send references to a WordPerfect
- 5.0/5.1-compatible output file, JEPRS automatically translates the IBM PC
- foreign characters into WordPerfect's character sets. A bug has been
- fixed that occasionally displayed extra text when adding references.
-
-
- VERSION 2.50:
-
- Version 2.5 of JEPRS automates much of the tedium associated
- with reference management. It can now generate output in the form of
- WordPerfect 5.0/5.1 files or PC-Write 3.0 files, including attributes
- for boldface, underline, italics, superscripts, and subscripts. It can
- also "read" codes you place in your WordPerfect or PC-Write documents,
- and *automatically* generate a bibliography based on those references.
- In fact, it can even go back and replace those codes in your document
- with an author+year citation (such as "Smith, et al. (1991)") or sequen-
- tial numbers.
- Other new features include the ability to insert periods after
- authors' initials (if you enter authors as "Miranda LM", it can option-
- ally convert it to "Miranda L.M."), as well as being capable of sorting
- references at the Search and Format Menus by author, journal, or year.
- In addition, sorting is much faster than in version 2.0. Registered
- users now get Med2Go, a MedLine interconversion utility, free of charge.
- Finally, JEPRS has improvements in its user interface. It is
- now mouse-compatible at the menus and help system. And entering refer-
- ences is made easier by having scrollable windows in which to enter
- text.
